Jaime Luna @ the Atelier for Solo Exhibition, Groundwork_ Works from the Ground Up x Jaime Luna, October 1 – 25, 2026

Groundwork is a series of works “from the ground up,” symbolic of the foundations of Jaime Luna’s art practice.

Resident Artist at the Atelier, Jaime Luna announces his upcoming solo exhibition, Groundwork: Works from the Ground Up, opening reception on Saturday, October 10, at 5:00 pm, at The Atelier in Midtown Sacramento.

The show features 10 deeply connected works and a few complimentary pieces. Collector anticipated work, Antigone, 2026 is based on the play of the same name by Sophocles. “I sought to harmonize the tension and antagonism in the play through composition and color and make the story more approachable. The bird shadows signal urgency as Antigone runs in defiance of the king’s orders to bury her deceased brother before the birds prey on his exposed body.” – Luna

Focused on creating introspective art that reflects our shared human experience, Luna’s work explores the relationship between the self and the other by allowing his abstract marks to evolve naturally into dynamic figurative compositions.

“When I began working on the first piece of this series, I did not have a large enough easel to accommodate the canvas so I placed it on the floor and got to work. This is how the ground perspective became the subject of this collection titled Groundwork. It is about taking limitations like materials, space, and visual perspective, and building from there – from the ground up.” Luna notes.
In his studio, Luna employs a meticulous process of trial and error guided by composition, color relationships, and the physical weight of texture.

Through a repetitive ritual of applying and scraping oil paint, he builds and strips away iterative layers until the underlying emotional sentiment of his subject is revealed. “You can hear Jaime’s process throughout the space when he works. There is a peaceful silence while he is adding layers onto the canvas. It’s only a few moments before the gentle, but raw, scraping sound of his palette knife begins its rhythmic flow.” says J.Harris.

Leveraging the longevity of oil paint, Luna maintains a crude freshness while invoking the canvas surface to participate equally in the image. His practice is further sharpened through en plein air studies and digital visual development.

Taught to draw from direct observation at the age of eleven when a family member gifted him his first sketchbooks and pencils, Jaime works at the intersection of representation and abstraction, treating the canvas as a site for intuitive experimentation. Luna holds a mathematics degree from the University of California, Davis, and recently transitioned from a career in analytics to a full-time Artist.
